We had a great time at our Playgroup Christmas party on Tuesday. Bombaderry Creek

Year 7 & 8 Indigenous student excursion to Bombaderry Creek

Year 7 and 8 Indigenous students and their friends travelled to Bombaderry Creek National Park to learn about their Indigenous culture from National Park Rangers. Students walked the trails alongside the creek and learnt about the Dharawal people living in this region, and experienced tasting some of the bush tucker plants, as well seeing the plants used for medicinal purposes. Mrs Cable's Year 10 English class has been working with the South Coast Writers' Centre to extend and enrich students' writing skills. After much consultation, we have decided to move to BLACK pants and shorts for our official uniform. What does this mean for your child? You can purchase new items from the uniform shop by the end of the year or at the beginning of 2018. Alternatively, you can keep wearing the grey and purchase new items as they are needed in 2018, you have 12 months to change over. AIME Taster Day

Year 7 and 8 Indigenous students experienced a day at the UOW AIME program. Students were inspired by various programs and mentors to aim high and achieve their dreams, whether that be improving their educational or leisure goals. Happy Halloween

The Creative and Performing Arts Committee at APHS really ramped up some Halloween spirit this year by having dress up competitions for both staff and students. It was embraced with scary enthusiasm, but underneath the makeup were some big smiles. The CAPA Committee also organised a cake stall, and the results were amazing, with Halloween themed cakes all round. Shane DuMughn - prize winner of the Ability Artist Competition! Rod Clark from Ability Artists presented Shane with his prize. On Monday APHS celebrated Grandparents' Day: a special day that recognises the significant contribution that grandparents make to their families and communities. Early Childhood Picture Book Launch

An official book launch for Year 9 Child Studies Picture Books was held on October 24th. Students were required to create and produce a picture book for an early childhood audience. This included the story and illustrations and some of the results were nothing short of amazing. 2018 Resource Allocation Model funding

In October 2017, all NSW public schools will receive a 2018 Planned School Budget Allocation Report. The report will assist with the management of the total budget delivered to schools through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM). The Resource Allocation Model (RAM) methodology distributes funding based on the individual needs of students and schools. This gives schools greater flexibility to make local decisions. APHS celebrated Book week and Australian Reading Hour in late Term 3 with some great prizes up for grabs. As all students in Years 7-10 should be doing 10-15 minutes of reading every night as part of ongoing English Homework, they were given the opportunity to formalise it over 6 nights and submit an entry to Mrs Hoole. As we conclude the term, the class of Year 12 2017 is also coming to an end. Next week we farewell our largest cohort of students, with 120 young men and women about to launch into the next phase of their lives. Wrapped With Love

Congratulations to the staff and students of Albion Park High for participating in the Wrapped with Love program: designed to provide blankets for the needy. Each blanket consists of 28 knitted squares which take approximately 3 hours each to knit: so each blanket takes roughly 90 hours to make. That's 90 hours of kindness and generosity for the Albion Park School community. The blankets are collected at the end of the month to be distributed to homeless shelters and refugees. Crossroads Excursion 2017

Albion Park High School Students in Year 11 travelled to Sydney on the 15 August to attend the ‘Bstreetsmart' program as part of the Stage 6 crossroads initiative. ‘Bstreetsmart' is held because our youth are being severely injured and killed due to potentially preventable road crashes. The NSW statistics in 2016 for 17-25 year olds showed 78 fatalities and 2479 injuries. These young people hold only 14% of licenses, but they are involved in 21% of fatal crashes. NDIS continues its roll out across NSW

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) started in NSW in July 2016, rolling out across half of the state. The rollout for the rest of NSW started on 1 July 2017 and the NDIS will be fully rolled out by mid 2018. The school readiness test is a ‘practice run' for schools to assess their technology ahead of NAPLAN Online. The readiness test is not an assessment of student ability. In an exciting development in the school's public speaking and debating program, our Year 9/10 team have been pronounced Zone winners in the NSW Premier's Debating Challenge. Giving a Voice to the Elephant in the Room

Did you know, of every 30 students in Australia, 7 will be dealing with a mental health issue, yet only 2 will reach out for support and 5 will suffer in silence? During Week 4, Year 10 students participated in a Batyr workshop focusing on preventative education in the area of youth mental health. Congratulations to Samuel Mawbey, Caleb Bates, Matthew Longhurst (Year7) and Bryce Van Den Berg (Year 10) who participated in the Interschool Chess Challenge held at Edmund Rice College on 20 June. On Wednesday 7 June, Year 11 held a "BBQ, Beanie and Flanno Day" to raise money for Anthony Pietrobelli and his family. The response from the school community was outstanding. I would like to congratulate the PARKS MEDIA MARK group who have, in their Year 11 Skills for work course, created a lunch time radio segment. Restoration of the memorial garden

Claire Hansen Arthur undertook the project of restoring the memorial garden in front of the school library as part of her Youth Frontiers program. The garden was originally established as a memorial to students and staff who have passed away, but had become less obvious in recent years with the growth of trees and shrubs in the garden. Tahlee Parsons, Sara Lindsay and Alyssa Matthews attended the International Women's Day function at the Nan Tien Temple hosted by the Australian Centre for Leadership for Women. Year 12 Bunnings BBQ Fundraiser Twenty-two of our current Year 12 students volunteered their time for their year group on Saturday the 18th February to raise money for the "Year 12 Events" of 2017. Many skills were learnt on this particular day - customer service skills, the handling of money and how to cook the perfect sausage. Introducing Healthy School Canteens

The introduction of the revised Healthy School Canteen Strategy increases the availability of healthy food and drink options in school canteens to make the healthy choice, the easy choice. It replaces the Fresh Tastes@School Strategy in NSW schools that was commonly known as the traffic light system. The revised strategy is consistent with the 2013 Australian Dietary Guidelines and classifies food and drinks as either Everyday or Occasional. Sugary drinks will continue not to be sold. Regular Reading Supporting Literacy Skills

Reading for pleasure is one of the best things your child can do to improve their literacy skills. Subsequently, a reading program is part of every student's nightly English Homework: between fifteen and twenty minutes per night. A reading log to record English Reading Homework will be given to students in both Years 7 and 8 and we ask parents to sign it each week. Compulsory All Day, Whole School Event Meet at school for normal roll call at 8:25am. We will depart for Albion Park Pool after rolls have been marked. The carnival will conclude at 2:35pm. Welcome back to school - 2017

Welcome Back to 2017! It was a dramatic start for Year 7s this year with forty three degree heat on their introduction to High School. Despite the uncomfortable weather the cohort was wonderful and the day was successful.
