Mother Nature has not been kind to us this year and our sports carnivals have suffered! Zone Athletics was no exception, wet weather meant that the carnival was rescheduled twice, and ultimately, cancelled entirely! In turn, we needed to submit distances and times to the zone convener, knowing that only the best three would go through to regional.
Twenty nine of our students made it through for a number of events and represented Albion Park High School at the AIS athletics track on Friday 31 July. We had an extremely successful day with 13 students making it through to represent the South Coast at the NSW CHS Carnival in September this year.
A stand-out performance was from Nicholas Horton, who broke the 15 years High Jump record, jumping a huge 1.90m (only 3 cm below his own height!) and beating the old record of 1.87m. He then went on to break the 15 years 200m Hurdles record by 0.21 of a second, running in 27.80 seconds. Nicholas accumulated the most amount of points for his age group and was crowned age champion.
A special mention to Karlie Gentles who offered to run in the 15 years girls relay team after already competing in the 13 years relay. Karlie knew that she would only be participating in the event to ensure our 15 years girls had a run, understanding that they would be disqualified, as each competitor is only allowed to race once. Some of our 15 years girls had travelled all the way to Canberra just for the relay, and were grateful for Karlie's great sportsmanship to ensure they got on the track. Well done Karlie! Bravo to all of our representatives! We are very proud of your achievements!
Congratulations to the following students who have made it through to the state athletics carnival in their respective events:
