Congratulations to Malita Moran, Winner of the Wollongong Art Gallery – Friends Photographic Prize 2015 in the Student Category
Term 2 saw the Year 12 Photography class capturing the traditional area of Portraiture. It also coincided with the Wollongong Art Gallery's Friends Photographic Portrait Competition, opened to the general public in areas of Professional, Amateur and Student categories. The opportunity was offered to the entire class and one student, Malita Moran, decided to enter in the student section.
Malita's entry, My Brother, is hanging on one of the walls of the BlueScope Gallery alongside twenty-five other portraits. All entries are various interpretations of their diverse subjects, capturing the essence of their personalities. My Brother, a striking black and white digital portrait of Bryson, showed a cheeky and mischievous grin, full of stories to share or a joke to tell.
The room fell silent as the President of the Friends of the Gallery took the microphone. The room, an eclectic mix of people of various ages, eagerly awaited the announcement. The Student Category was up first, with Malita's name barely pronounced and a huge gasp from an Albion Park High School Senior in disbelief.
Malita took out First Place, winning both a camera and monetary prize, along with accolades from an appreciative audience.
The best part, according to the Photographer herself, was the smile she could not wipe off her face from seeing a Winner plaque placed under her portrait. Again, I recommend you see it for yourself; the exhibition closes September 20, 2015.
