Sports Committee

Background: In 1996 the sports committee was formed in response to the rich history of sport in the school and the community and the need to nurture this strength within the school. The committee was also a response to the growing responsibilities and duties of sport organisers within the school, the vast number of students who were excelling at sport, the large number of representative sport students who need financial support and in response to the wish to promote an active and healthy lifestyle as part of the school’s culture.

Description: The sports committee consists of at most twenty students, with no more than six from one-year group, who have a strong interest in sport. All have to be willing to share ideas and be pro active in bringing their ideas to fruition. Committee members must be prepared to give up their time, to be punctual, reliable and responsible. With weekly committee meetings during lunchtime, committee members must be prepared to attend these meetings, take minutes and fulfil assembly duties.

Responsibilities: There have been numerous fundraising activities organised by the sports committee to sponsor Albion Park High School students who achieve State and National representation in school related and non-school related sports. Several times a year the sports committee organises and officiates lunchtime competitions.

Once a week the sports committee contributes to the “Park Sport” section of the Albion Park High School’s “Park Press”. This section explicitly congratulates and celebrates the sports people of the school.

Dutifully the sports committee officiates at school and zone carnivals and often coordinate other sporting events.

In 1996 in its inaugural year the sports committee initiated the annual Sports Presentation Ceremony, which continues to be a highlight on the schools calendar.

For the many students who have been part of the program the sports committee has been responsible for providing the opportunity for the development of leadership skills, the development of team building skills, the development of organisational skills and the development of communication skills in a non formal and formal setting. The committee has also provided the opportunity for members to act as role models, to promote a healthy lifestyle and to meet people.

This high profile group of well-respected and energetic young adults are excellent ambassadors for their peers and the school, and are an essential and necessary part of Albion Park High School.
