School Counsellors

School Counsellor Service at Albion Park High School

School counsellors are trained teachers with undergraduate and postgraduate training in psychology and counselling (most school counsellers are registered psychologists or are conditionally registered psychologists).

School counsellors have a unique and vital role by providing:
  • Counselling: Individual and group counselling of students. Interviews with parents/carers. Consulting with teachers.

  • Assessment: Using a range of instruments to assess students with significant learning difficulties, behaviour difficulties, mental health problems, and seeking gifted and talented provision.

  • Liason: contact with and application for specialised support for agencies outside of the school:

  • Department of Education: applying for funds to support students with disabilities, support teacher behaviour intervention, support teacher vision and hearing and placement in support classes for intellectual disability and emotional disturbance.
Agencies: Child and adolescent mental health, Department of Community Services, paediatricians, psychiatrists, Centrelink, Centacare, Anglicare and others.

What students and families tell the school counsellor is confidential (except when a persons safety is at risk i.e. suicidal ideation). At present in Albion Park High School we have two school counsellors, Mr Michael Flood and Ms Audrey Hunt.

Both are allocated two and a half days at the school, and the school has 5 days of the week covered most weeks. If there are any issues requiring discussion please feel free to contact the school and/or the counsellors.
